Interactive hotspots

Interactive hotspots turn static pages into interactive experiences. You draw rectangular regions on your document and configure what each region does when clicked—open a link, jump to another page, or play embedded video, audio, or image content. Taps on each region are recorded and reported per hotspot.

Drawing and editing hotspots

When you enable hotspot editing, you work on a flat-page view of your document. Drag to draw rectangular regions, then select each region to configure its action. The editor displays existing hotspots and lets you move and resize them by dragging. Coordinates are stored as normalized 0–1 values, so hotspots scale automatically across different viewer modes and zoom levels.

Each page supports up to 30 hotspots, and your entire document can contain up to 300 hotspots total. Half-configured hotspots—for example, a link without a URL—do not save; the editor prunes them when you finish editing.

Hotspot kinds

Each hotspot performs one of five actions when clicked:

Open a link — visitors follow an HTTP or HTTPS URL, in a new tab (the default) or the current tab, as you specify.

Go to a page — visitors jump to another page in your document.

Play a video — you paste a YouTube or Vimeo link, and EveryPage stores the provider and video ID from it. Those two are the only providers accepted. Playback uses the providers' privacy-friendly embed hosts (youtube-nocookie.com and player.vimeo.com).

Show an image — displays an image you upload. Captions are optional and are truncated at 200 characters.

Play audio — plays an MP3 file you upload. In standard, flipbook, and magazine modes, audio plays in a small floating card at the bottom right of the viewer.

Video and image hotspots open in a centred modal in standard, flipbook, and magazine modes. In swipe mode every media kind—including audio—opens in the story-style bottom sheet instead.

Media assets

Image and audio hotspots rely on the per-document asset system. You can upload and store up to 10 assets per document, shared across logos, background images, and hotspot media. A document has at most one logo and one background, and re-uploading either replaces the previous file, so swapping them never consumes an extra slot.

Image files accept PNG, JPEG, and WebP formats, with a maximum size of 5 MB. Audio files must be MP3 format, with a maximum size of 10 MB.

Recording hotspot taps

When a viewer clicks a hotspot, EveryPage records the tap. The activation is attributed to the hotspot, the page, and the viewer's session, and a tap referencing a hotspot that does not belong to the document is rejected. Recording is never plan-gated—taps are banked on every tier, so an upgrade reveals the history—but the report itself is Pro: per-hotspot activation counts appear in the document's readership page alongside reader sessions.

Content replacement and hotspots

When you replace a document's content with a new PDF, hotspots are cleared by default—new pages may not align with the old ones, and page-anchored regions become meaningless. Page-anchored reader notes are cleared in the same pass. You can opt to keep both by passing ?clearAnchors=false (or ?clearAnchors=0) on the content-replace request, accepting any mismatch. Notes that are not anchored to a page always survive a content replacement.

Plan requirements

Interactive hotspots are a Pro feature, enforced on both sides:

• Writing: saving a hotspot set from a non-Pro account is rejected with 403 Forbidden.
• Reading: when the document's owner is not Pro, the viewer receives an empty hotspot set, so nothing renders.

The read-side check runs on every visit, so hotspots stop rendering as soon as you downgrade. Your stored hotspots are not deleted, and they render again—with their tap counts intact—as soon as you return to Pro.
