Link previews

What Slack, iMessage, LinkedIn and email clients show when you paste a share link, and how to write your own title, description and image.

When you paste a share link into Slack, Teams, iMessage, WhatsApp, LinkedIn or an email client, the app fetches the link and shows a small card under it: a title, a line of description and an image. EveryPage decides what goes on that card.

The standard card

Every plan gets the standard card. What it shows depends on whether a stranger could open the document:

  • Open documents show the document's name (without .pdf), "N pages · Shared via EveryPage", and an image of the first page. With a page range set, the image is the first page readers can see, and the count is the pages in the range.
  • Password- or email-protected documents show the general EveryPage card. It says nothing about the document: no name, no page count, no first page. The card's image address answers "not found".
  • Expired, deleted, paused or unclaimed documents also show the general EveryPage card.
  • Hosted HTML sites show their name with no image.

Your own card

On Pro you can write the card yourself. The Link preview section is on the Share tab of a document's Configure & Share page:

  • Title: up to 70 characters. This is required. Without a title, the document keeps the standard card.
  • Description: up to 200 characters, on one line. If you leave it blank, the card says "Shared via EveryPage", or the page count on an open document.
  • Image: a PNG, JPEG or WebP image up to 5 MB. It's scaled to fill a 1200 × 630 card and cropped from the centre, so a wide image works best. Transparent areas show as white. If you don't add an image, an open document keeps its first page and a protected one shows no image.

A live preview under the fields shows the card as chat apps will draw it.

Your card is public, even on a protected document. That's the point: it lets a password- or email-protected link carry your title and picture instead of the general EveryPage card. Anyone the link is pasted to sees what you write, before they sign in. Don't put anything there that the password or email gate is meant to protect.

Each document has its own card. Templates don't copy it, and applying a template keeps the card the document already has.

If your plan drops below Pro, your card stops showing straight away and the standard card returns. The title, description and image are kept and come back when you upgrade again.

Changing a card that's already been shared

Chat apps and social networks keep their own copy of a card. A link pasted before you made a change can keep showing the old card in that conversation, and some apps refresh their copy only after a few hours or days. A new image gets a new image address, so apps that fetch the link again pick it up straight away. LinkedIn's Post Inspector refreshes LinkedIn's copy on request.

Search engines

Link previews don't make a document searchable. Share links, their preview images and embeds tell search engines not to index them on every plan, and that can't be switched off.
