How to see who viewed a Google Doc
By Nick Pears ·
Open the Doc and click Tools > Activity dashboard: the All viewers tab lists people in your organisation who have opened it. That only works when a work or school (Google Workspace) account owns the file. On a personal Gmail account, Google says "no one can see the view history" (Google Docs Help).
Below: the steps, the reasons the dashboard often shows nothing, what other people can see when you view their Doc, and how to see who opens a document you send outside your organisation. Every statement about Google links to Google's own help page, checked in October 2026.
Steps: open the Activity dashboard
- Open the Google Doc. The same works for Sheets and Slides.
- Click Tools > Activity dashboard.
- Open All viewers to see who in your organisation has viewed the file, or Viewer trend for views over time (Google Workspace Help).
To open the dashboard you need edit access to the file and must be in the same organisation as its owner (Google Workspace Admin Help).
Why the Activity dashboard shows nothing
- A personal account owns the file. Google: "If the file isn't owned by a Google Account through work or school, no one can see the view history." (Docs Help)
- You can't open it. You need edit access, and you must be in the owner's organisation.
- The reader wasn't signed in. Google's help only describes showing signed-in people (Docs Help).
- The reader hid their views. Anyone can turn off their view history for one file or for all files, and an admin can turn it off for a whole organisation (Docs Help, Admin Help).
- It's a PDF, not a Google Doc. Google documents view history for Docs, Sheets and Slides. Drive's Activity panel lists edits, comments, renames, moves, uploads and shares, not views (Google Drive Help).
Even when it works, Google says the Activity dashboard "is not meant for auditing or legal purposes" and points admins to the Drive audit log instead (Admin Help).
Can you see who viewed a Google Doc on a personal account?
No. If a personal Gmail account owns the file, Google says no one can see the view history (Google Docs Help). What you can see is who is in the file right now: people you didn't invite individually appear as anonymous animals while they have it open (Google Docs Help). Google describes no way to see who they were afterwards.
Is viewing a Google Doc anonymous?
It depends on who owns the file and whether you're signed in. If a work or school account owns it and you're signed in to the same organisation, your view can appear in its Activity dashboard, and Google notes views can show in other organisations' dashboards too (Admin Help). To hide yours, open Tools > Activity dashboard privacy and turn off "Show my view history for this document" (Docs Help).
If you open a shared link without signing in, other people in the file see you as an anonymous animal while you're there. If a Workspace organisation owns the file, its admins may still see the view in the Drive audit log, which records views by people who aren't signed in, without a name (Drive log events).
It works the other way too: when you share a link to a file, Google shows your name and email as its owner (Google Docs Help).
How to see who opens a document you send outside your organisation
Google's view history works only on files a work or school account owns, and it may not show readers outside your organisation. On personal Gmail files, no one can see it. If you need to know whether a client, an investor or a parent actually read something, send a copy as a tracked link instead:
- In the Doc, click File > Download > PDF document.
- Sign in (a free account is enough), upload the PDF and share the link it gives you. Without an account the link lasts 7 days and records no readership. See PDF to link.
- Check the readership. A free account counts how many people opened it and how many times; Basic shows how long each page was read and where readers stopped; Pro can name readers who enter their email or who each get their own link. See PDF tracking.
Two honest catches. You're tracking a PDF copy, so edits to the Doc don't reach readers unless you replace the file behind the link (Pro) or send a new one. And readers get a PDF, not an editable Doc. Reader IP addresses are never stored.
Questions
How do I see who viewed a document in Google Docs?
Open it and click Tools > Activity dashboard, then the All viewers tab, which shows people in your organisation who have viewed the file. It works only for files owned by a work or school Google account, and you need edit access and must be in the owner's organisation to open it.
Can you see who viewed your Google Doc with a personal Gmail account?
No. Google says that if a file isn't owned by a work or school account, no one can see its view history. You can only see who is in the file at the moment; people you didn't invite individually appear as anonymous animals.
Is viewing a Google Doc anonymous?
Not always. On a work or school file, your view can appear in the Activity dashboard unless you turn off your view history. If you open a shared link without signing in, others in the file see an anonymous animal, and if a Workspace organisation owns the file, its Drive audit log can still record the view without your name.
How do I hide that I viewed a Google Doc?
Open Tools > Activity dashboard privacy and turn off "Show my view history for this document". To hide it on every file, turn off "Show your view history" under Activity dashboard in your settings. An organisation's admin can also turn view history off for everyone.
Can people see your email when you share a Google Doc?
Yes. Google says that when you share a link to a file, your name and email are visible as the owner of that file.
