# Page style and behaviour

You can fine-tune the appearance and motion of pages in your document viewer. Each setting takes effect only in the [viewer modes](https://everypage.co/docs/viewer/viewer-modes) that use it; the last section of this article lists which. The page cosmetics live under Style in the Configure & Share editor and the motion settings under Behavior; both require Basic or above.

## Page appearance

The page cosmetics below adjust how individual pages render visually. Page shadow and rounded corners apply in every viewer mode; stacked edges are flipbook-only; cover page alone applies in flipbook and magazine.

| **Page Shadow** | 0–3 | 0 (Default) | Depth of the shadow cast under the page or book. Steps: Default, Soft, Medium, Deep. Default keeps each viewer mode's own stock shadow rather than removing it. |
| **Rounded Corners** | 0–3 | 0 (Square) | Corner radius of the outer page corners. Steps: Square, Subtle, Medium, Round. In flipbook and magazine only the outer corners round, so the centre spine stays a straight join. |
| **Stacked Page Edges** | On/Off | Off | Layered paper-edge effect on the outer sides of the book, simulating a stack of sheets. |
| **Cover Page Alone** | On/Off | On | Whether the cover displays solo (On) or pairs with page 2 like a calendar spread (Off). |

## Page-turn behavior

The following settings control how pages transition and sound. Page turn speed, sound, and right-to-left reading apply in flipbook and magazine; the default layout applies in flipbook only.

| Setting | Range | Default | Effect |

| **Page Turn Speed** | 200–1200 ms | 450 ms | Duration of the page-flip animation. Lower values feel snappier; higher values feel more deliberate. |
| **Page Turn Sound** | On/Off | Off | Play an audible page-turn sound when readers flip. Turning it on adds a mute button to the reader's toolbar; their choice is remembered in their browser and applies to every EveryPage document they open. |
| **Right-to-Left Reading** | On/Off | Off | Open the document from the other side and advance backwards, for Arabic, Hebrew, and Japanese documents. |
| **Default Layout** | Auto / 1-up / 2-up | Auto | Auto shows one page on narrow screens and a two-page spread on larger ones. 1-up always shows one page; 2-up always shows a spread. Readers can override it for their session with the flipbook toolbar toggle. |

## Auto-advance in swipe mode

The auto-advance controls only appear while the document's viewer mode is set to swipe, and only swipe mode acts on them:

| **Auto-Advance Pages** | On/Off | Off | Enable automatic page progression. When On, pages turn at the interval below. Readers pause it by pressing and holding anywhere; it also pauses while the browser tab is hidden, while a hotspot or call-to-action sheet is open, and it stops on the last page rather than looping. |
| **Seconds Per Page** | 3–30 seconds | 6 seconds | Time each page displays before advancing. Stored only while auto-advance is On. |

## Tier eligibility

The free tier is not "settings ignored" — it is "defaults only". EveryPage stores an appearance blob per document, and a free account may only store one that is entirely default.

- **Free**: A save is accepted only if every appearance setting is left at its default. Any non-default value is rejected with a 403 and an upgrade prompt, so the stored appearance stays empty and readers always get the stock viewer.
- **Basic and above**: All the page style and behaviour settings on this page are saved and applied when readers open the document.
- **Pro**: Adds the [accent colour, toolbar theme, badge position, and call-to-action button](https://everypage.co/docs/viewer/accent-toolbar-and-cta) on top.

The tier is re-checked when a reader opens the document, not just when you save. If your plan changes, the viewer immediately falls back to what your current plan allows: a Basic document keeps its background, logo, page styling, and auto-advance but drops the Pro-only settings, and a free document renders stock.

## Viewer-mode specificity

Each setting is read only by the modes that use it:

Page shadow and rounded corners are read by all four modes. The rest are mode-specific:

- **Flipbook**: stacked edges, cover page alone, page turn speed, sound, right-to-left, and default layout.
- **Magazine**: page turn speed, sound, right-to-left, and cover page alone. Stacked edges and the default layout are ignored.
- **Swipe**: auto-advance and its interval. No flip settings apply.
- **Standard**: no flip or auto-advance settings. Background, logo, and badge still apply — see [branding and logo](https://everypage.co/docs/viewer/branding-and-logo).

Embedded viewers are not a separate mode: an `/embed/` link renders the document's own viewer mode and follows the same table.
